Try to go into each new release as a new individual game without the biases of the previous incarnations and I think you'd be less likely to be disappointed if it's not like your favorite. All in all, to me it sounds like people didn't like the game because it wasn't the same as whichever SO they grew up with or had the best memories playing but that doesn't make the game bad.
I do have the second on my list to play but since its on the PSP I've been a bit unmotivated to get it.
I was introduced to SO3 first and from there played 4, 5 and then 1 and all were great with their own pros and cons but I never ran into something so bad i couldn't play the game or thought any of them were garbage. Blindsides in 4 were cool for a while but quickly got annoying for me since it felt like that's all the game wanted you to do so personally I'm glad their gone. The rush reserve guage was nice for experience, fol or SP gains and bing able to load a profile without having to build from scratch ( like 3) was definitely a plus.

I do kind of wish that you learned new abilities by leveling up instead of through manuals but not a game killer for me. What exactly didn't people like? I loved this game so much when "The last hope" came out for xbox 360, I bought an Xbox 360 in 2009 just to play it. I've played it since 2004 on ps2 and again on ps4.
